The subsidiary alliance is a system introduced by Lord Richard Wellesley, British Governor General of India from 1798 to 1805.
Its main principles were:
1. Any Indian ruler accepting the subsidiary alliance with East India Company had to keep the British army in their territory and was supposed to pay for its maintenance.
2. In case of failure of payments, some of the state territories were ceded to the British.
3. The ruler accepting the subsidiary alliance was forced to keep a Brtish official in their territory.

According to it:

♦ In lieu of the payments, some of the states territory was ceded to the British.
♦ The ruler accepting it was forced to keep a British official at the court called 'Resident'.
♦ The states brought under British control by this system included Hyderabad, Gwalior, Indore, Jaipur, Jodhpur , Oudh.
