Universal indicator :

pH scale is known as universal indicator. A scale for measuring hydrogen concentration in a solution is called pH scale. pH value of a solution is simply a number which indicates theacidic or basic nature of a solution. The pH of neutral solutions is 7. Value less than 7 on the pH scale represent an acidic solution. pH value of a solution above 7 represent a basic solution.

Litmus :

Litmus solution is a dye extracted from lichen, a plant belonging to the division of Thallophyta and is used as an indicator. In neutral solution litmus colour is purple.

Phenolphthalein :

Phenolphthalein is often used as an indicator in acid - base titrations. It turns colourless in acidic solution and pink in basic solutions.

Methyl orange :

Methyl orange is widely used in titrations. Methyl orange shows red colour in acidic medium and yellow colour in basic medium.

Bromothymol blue :

Bromothymol blue is commonly used for testing the pH of solutions. It has a blue colour when basic conditions, a green colour in neutral conditions and yellow in acidic conditions.

Choice of indicator summary :

The choice of indicator will depend on the actual expected pH at the equivalence point. For strong acids and weak bases methyl orange is the indicator of choice.
