Some metals and their uses are listed below -

★ Gold and silver are used for making jewellery.

★ Copper is used for making electrical wires, cooking utensils etc.

★ Zinc is mainly used as a protective coat for iron.

★ Aluminium is used for making electrical cables, packaging, cooking utensils, etc.

★ Metals like iron and steel are widely used in building and home constructions.

★ liquid metals like Mercury which can exists in room temperature is used in clinical thermometres.

★ lead is commonly used in car battries .

★ coins are made up of nickel.

uses of common metals:

Uses of Iron:
•Pig iron is are hard and brittle form of iron with a high carbon content it is used to make five storage tanks railing extra by the process of casting.
•Article such as nails, bolts, agricultural tools, hammering heated wrought iron. Wrought iron is tough, Malleable fo little carbon content.
Uses of copper:
• Since copper is a good conductor of electricity, It is used in electrical wires and cables and components of Electrical switches. Copper coils are used in electrical motor and Transformers.
• Since it is a good conductor of heat, it is used to make the bottoms of stainless steel vessels.
• It forms useful alloys.
Uses of aluminium:
• Aluminium is increasingly replacing copper as an electric conductor, especially in overhead cables.
• Aluminium alloys are light and strong. They are used to make bodies and engine parts of aircrafts and Cars.
• It is used for making aluminium foil and cooking utensils.
Uses of Zinc:
• Zinc is used in dry cells.
• Zinc is used to make galvanised iron pipes and sheets to protect them from corrosion.
• it is used in the preparation of useful alloys such as brass, bronze and german silver.
Other Metals:
• Lead is used to make electrodes for lead storage batteries that i used in automobile and inverters.

Uses of Common Non-metals:
Uses of silicon:
• Silicon is used in the electronic and computer industries to make devices, such as transistors, microchips and solar cells.
• It is used to manufacture silicones, which are used for making wateroroof clothes, greases and polishes, and insulating material for electrical appliances.
Uses of sulphur:
• it is used in the manufacture of sulphuric acid, sulphur dioxide gas, sulphides and other sulphur-containing industrial chemicals.
•It is used as an insecticide and fungicide in agriculture.
•It is used for vulcanising rubber (making rubber harder)and in making powder.
Uses of phosphorous:
•Phosphorus is used in making matchboxes and in the firework industries.
•It is used in the manufacture of phosphate fertilizers.
Uses of Hydrogen:
• Hydrogen is used in the manufacture of ammonia industrial Chemicals such as methanol and in the manufacture of vanaspati.
• It is used in the extraction of metals such as copper, lead and Tin.
• Oxy-hydrogen flame, obtained by burning hydrogen in oxygen is used for cutting and welding metals.
• Hydrogen is considered to be a non-polluting fuel of the future. Researchers are being carried out to use it efficiently as a fuel.
Uses of a noble metals:
Silver and gold are present at the bottom of the activity series of metals. They are unreactive metals and do not react with water, acids and alkalis.
They, therefore occur in the free state in nature.Platinum is also as a noble metals.
• They are used to make ornaments. As they are unreactive, the ornaments made from them do not lose their shine easily.
• Gold and silver are also used to give a protective and decorative coating on other metals by the process of electroplating.
• Platinum is used in electrical gadgets. The international standards of weights and measures are made of platinum-iridium alloys.
