Electrolysis means the decomposition of the compounds by the flow of the electricity.

In the Electrolysis of the water,Hydrogen and oxygen are produced in the cathode and anode respectively by the flow of the electricity in the presence of the Sulphuric Acid.

Water is the Covalent compound thus it does not conducts electricity and also does not ionize. But when the acids are disolved in it, then it ionize and hence conucts the Electricity. For the same reason sulphuric acid is added to the water during the Electrolysis.

H₂O ------→ H⁺ + OH⁻
H₂SO₄ -------→ 2H⁺ + SO₄²⁻

Now, hydrogen ions migrate towards the cathdoe.
Reaction at cathode,
H⁺ + e⁻ -----→ H
H + H ------→ H₂

Both the sulphate ions and the Hydroxide ions migrate towards the anode but only Hydroxide ions will be deposited since it lies below the sulphate ions in the electrochemical series.

Reaction at anode,
4OH⁻ - 4e- ---------→ 2H₂O + O₂

The electrolysis of water is an example of the catalysis because the mass of the sulphuric acid before and after the electrolysis will be same.

Sulphuric acid is only used and not any other acids because it is non volatile acids.

Hope it helps.
