Explain why evolution should be compared to the branches of a tree rather than a ladder

evolution is a gradual process and one species can evolve either in a modified species or many species through adaptive radiation and convergent evolution and hence evolution is not like a ladder it is like branches of tree.for eg., Darwin finches.
