Explain why pillars and flyover made broad

Pillars and Flyover are made broader at the base than at the top to withstand the pressure
as the pressure is greatest at the bottom, the dam must be made thickest at its base. A wide base spreads the force above it across a bigger surface. 

Mathematically : P = F/A ,, so when Area = Maximum then pressure is minimum because
P ∝ 1/A .

Hi there !!

Pillars and flyovers are made broad based on the principal of pressure and area of contact
We know that force is inversely proportional to area of contact.
This means that if the area of contact increases, the force exerted decreases and if the area of contact decreases ,the force exerted increases.
Pillars and Flyovers are made broad so as to increase the area of contact so that the force exerted is less. This will distribute the weight evenly and equally on all sides and help the pillars and Flyovers to stay stable .
