Explain why silver nitrate crystals are dissolved in distilled water and not in tap water to prepare silver nitrate solution as a labratory reagent.

The tap water contains chlorine and fluorine, and these chemicals can react with the substances.


So if you put silver nitrate crystals in the tap water then these chemicals can mix with the crystals and create some adverse effects.


On the other hand if you mix some silver nitrate crystals in distilled water then you cannot find any reactions because distilled water does not contain any such chemicals.
