Due to the increase in height of a dam, the liquid pressure becomes greater at the bottom(i.e.P∝h). In order to reduce liquid pressure, the lower area of a dam is made thicker.As we know that, P∝1/A
So greater the area lesser the liquid pressure. Hence,for this reason the walls of a dam are thicker near the bottom than at the top.

Pressure exerted by a liquid is dependent on the depth that it increases with greater pressure . That is to say, as the depth increases, pressure applied by water on the walls of the dam also increases. In order to withstand the great pressure, the walls are build thicker. Hence a dam has broader walls at the bottom then at the top.
