This is because x is actually a normal non-fixed valued amount which can vary until we find its actual value.

Remember that x is known as a variable.

It's allowed to us to use any of the alphabets in place of x.

For Example:

If there's an equation stating that 2x+5=9,

Then it is possible that we can understand it as 2a+5=9 or 2j+5=9 etc.

Because your teacher used to explain you the concept of equations by taking the example of the variable x.

Teachers used to do this as they find that the variable x is very familiar to the answer while solving any equation.
