FORMATION OF TRIPLE BOND:-

According to quantum chemical theory chemical bonds are formed by overlapping of atom orbitals leading to formation of molecular orbitals. For chemists the most practical is hybridization theory. For instance there are 3 hybridization states of the carbon atom:

here is the electron configuration of the carbon atom in excited state

2S ↑ 2P ↓↑ 2P ↓↑ 2P↑

SP3 hybridization, where 1S orbital is hybridized with 3 P orbitals resulting of 4 SP3 orbitals: ( ATTACHMENT)

An frontal overlapping of these orbitals with either other SP3 orbitals or S orbitals forms sigma bonds. Typical example is the molecule of Methane, where carbon SP3 orbitals overlap with the hydrogen S orbitals.

2. SP2 hybridization: where 1S orbital is hybridized with 2 P orbitals resulting of 3 SP2 orbitals and 1 P orbitals, which is named pi-orbital. The pi orbital is orthogonal to the plane of SP2 orbitals.

The sigma bonds between the two carbon atoms are formed by frontal overlapping of their SP2 orbitals, the sigma bond between carbon and hydrogen atoms are formed by overlapping between the sp2 ethene bonds and S hydrogen bonds. The double bond is created by side overlapping of the two P (pi) orbitals. That is why this pi bond is weck and easily breaked.

3. SP hybridization: where 1S orbital is hybridized with 1 P orbitals resulting of 2 SP orbitals and 2 P orbitals, which is named pi-orbital. The 2 pi orbital are orthogonal to the line of the 2 SP2 orbitals.
