Metals tend to lose electrons in chemical reactions, as indicated by their low ionization energies. ... In addition, the atomic radius increasesgoing down a group, placing the outer electrons further away from the nucleus and making that electron less attracted by the nucleus.

hi!

  1. metallic character refers the tendency of loosing electrons.
  2. as down the group new shells are added and there are more electrons and thereby screening effect also increases.
  3. and non metallic character is the tendency of atom to hold its electrons.
  4. down the group the tendency of loosing electrons increases and metallic character increases which means non metallic character decreases
