In water, metal loses its electrons and the oxygen of water being electronegative in nature attracts these electrons as a result oxygen combines with the metal. This results in the formation of metal hydroxide.
Whereas the metal gets consumed in water and when a pure metal rod is immersed in water then it starts to corrode after sometime because of reaction between metal and water. A layer of hydroxide gets deposited over the surface of metal if metal is immersed in water.
