In any given gas and air mixture, the flame gets to the
point of sustaining itself when enough of the gas is there to have combustion
and spreads due to ignition.
There is an upper and a lower limit of being flammable, of course, high and low, for the flammable gas that will help in combustion. The downward limit is directly proportional to least amount of gas that will give out enough for the flame to be self-sustaining.
Adding more gas will make the flame bigger giving out more heat with increased chances of explosion when the mixture ignites.
For the methane and air mix, the amount present there, becomes so huge that the flame is not sustained since the oxygen supply is not enough. Exceeding upper limit gas concentrations, the flame will not be sustainable due to lack of oxygen.
