Ans. At first, Chubukov suspected that Lomov had come to borrow some money. He was not sincere while telling Lomov that he had always loved him like his own son. He said all this only because Lomov had come with the proposal to marry his daughter. Lomov was a rich and handsome young man who would be a suitable match to his daughter. So, just for the sake of his daughter, Chubukov was trying to flatter Lomov.
