Face the Brute - Concept of Courage and Boldness, According to Swami Vivekananda

Once, during his struggling days, Swami Vivekananda was passing through the streets of Haridvar, quite early in the morning. Not a soul was astir on the road that morning. As the young ascetic turned a road, he found a herd of monkeys coming towards him. Seeing Vivekananda alone, the herd charged at him. Fear gripped him; seeing the herd charging at him, with no way to escape, the young Swami turned around and took to his heels. But the animals were faster. He could feel them breathing on his back. It appeared to him, soon the herd would tear him to pieces. Summoning up all his courage, Vivekananda stopped abruptly and faced the herd charging at him. No sooner had he stopped than the herd also stopped at some distance from him. Vivekananda kept staring at the herd. The herd did not move an inch further. Now Vivekananda took a step towards the herd; the herd moved back a step; now Vivekananda charged at them, shooing; in the blink of an eye, the herd was dispersed.

From this instance, Vivekananda learnt a very important lesson of his life, which he often taught to his disciples also. The lesson he learnt was: “Fear flees when you face it.” It is quite true that we must also face the brutes of our fears if we have to overcome them. If we will keep running away from our fears and challenges, they will become too strong for us to tackle. Not only Vivekananda, but all the other great and venerable personages of all times, have also taught us the same lesson. Jesus faced his fears and attained Kingdom of Heaven. Lincoln faced his fears, and became the greatest President of all times. Helen Keller faced her fears and overcame all her disabilities.

The lesson to be learnt for all of us is that we must also face our fears. They are inside us. They are hidden in our fearful thoughts. Like Swami Vivekananda, we must not get scared of them; rather, mustering all our strength, we must face them. The moment we will confront them, they will flee. We will emerge victorious! Facing the brute of fear lurking inside our own hearts is the secret of all-round success. So, let’s gird up our loins, and face the brute.
