3x^3 - x^2 - 3x + 1

= x^2 ( 3x - 1 ) - 1 ( 3x - 1 )

= ( 3x - 1 ) ( x^2 - 1 )

= ( 3x - 1 ) ( x + 1 ) ( x - 1 )
