factorise: 40+3x-x square

x² -3x -40
x² -8x +5x -40
x ( x - 8) + 5(x -8)
(x-8) (x+8)
x = -8,x = 8
x can't be negative, so x = 8

(SPLIT THE MIDDLE TERM)

 {x}^{2}  + 8x - 5x + 40

(TAKE COMMONS FROM BOTH)

x(x + 8)  - 5(x + 8)

HERE IS YOUR ANSWER

(x + 8) \: and \: (x - 5)
