 = 3x {}^{3}  - x {}^{2}  - 3x + 1

 = x {}^{2}  \times (3x - 1) - (3x - 1)

 = (3x - 1) \times (x {}^{2}  - 1)

 = using \:  >  \: a {}^{2}  - b {}^{2}  = (a - b)(a + b)

 = (3x - 1)(x - 1)(x + 1)

In first step you start by grouping like terms in the equation for the equation to factorise.Like terms  are grouped according to how the the are in terms to each other either in power form,letter form or even numbers.While factorising you should make sure that the terms in both the two brackets are alike.  The solution to this question is represented in the picture attached bellow;
