given,

84 - 2x - 2x^2

=> - 2x^2 - 2x + 84

=> - 2x^2 - ( 14 - 12 )x + 84

=> - 2x^2 - 14x + 12x + 84

=> - 2x ( x + 7 ) + 12 ( x + 7 )

=> ( x + 7 ) ( - 2x + 12 )

either,

x + 7 = 0 or - 2x + 12 = 0

=> x = - 7 => x = - 12/-2

=> x = 6

x = - 7 , 6
