Vaccine-preventable diseases such as measles continue to kill children at an expeditious rate. The major causes of death in these slums are malnutrition, diarrhea, pneumonia, and neonatal diseases. The Times of India clearly stated, “in a month more than five hundred children die from these diseases in the state of Maharashtra,” which is located in India. According to the International Journal of Epidemiology, chronic diseases are a leading cause of death in rural areas in India. Specifically diseases of the circulatory system (32% percent) are the lead causes of mortality, with similar quantity of death attributable to deprivation of blood supply heart disease and stroke. The next leading cause is injury and external causes of mortality (13 percent), with one- third of these diseases causing deliberate self harm. Third were infectious and parasitic diseases (12 percent). Tuberculosis and intestinal conditions each caused one-third of deaths within this category.

HIV was assigned as the cause for 2 percent of all deaths. The fourth and fifth leading cause of death was neoplasms (7 percent) and diseases of the respiratory system (5 percent).
