Three young men, and a dog, who have no idea of how to get into a boat, or what to do when they are in it, decide to undertake a camping and rowing trip on an English river.
They also have no idea how to pitch a tent, and their attempt to do this, in the pouring rain, is hilarious.
They take an absurd amount of food, most of which the dog eats, and the whole thing ends in a kind of politely absurd succession of disasters. And thank you John, I had forgotten about trying to open a can with an oar.
IMHO it is one of the three funniest books in the English language. The other two being of course, “1066 and all that,” (Sellars and Yeats,) and “Sunshine Sketches of a Little Town,” (Stephen Leacock.)
There was a TV adaption of “Three Men in a Boat.” Do not bother watching it, it missed the point entirely.
