HIGH SCHOOL ENGLISH GRAMMAR AND COMPOSITION” by Wren & Martin, taught me my figures of speech, and I have borrowed primarily from it.
A Figure of Speech is a departure from the ordinary form of expression, or the ordinary course of ideas in order to produce a greater effect.
Many figures of speech are used in literary works to bring color, richness, and symbolism to the writing. Which is why figures of speech are also known as literary devices. Other figures of speech are utilized in everyday applications like blogs, newspaper articles, commercials, TV, movies, advertising, marketing, etc.
Figures of Speech may be classified as under:
Those based on Resemblance, such asSimileMetaphorPersonificationApostropheThose based on Contrast, such asAntithesisEpigramThose based on Association, such asMetonymySynecdocheThose based on Construction, such asClimaxAnticlimax
