Roots are the parts of plants that are underground. Since we don't often see them, we don't often think about roots, but they are an essential part of plants. Like animals, plants have a vascular system, rather like a pipeline, that moves water and minerals from the soil up to the leaves and fruits of a plant, and products of photosynthesis, like sucrose, from the leaves down to the roots. Without roots, plants would have difficulty staying upright.
