AGRA: With the aim of increasing greenery in urban areas, the UP culture department will spend Rs 1.78 crore in developing a greenbelt in 50 acres near the Taj Mahal.

The project is being implemented by the forest department which plans to take up a massive plantation drive in Dhandupura, located 2 km from the Taj Mahal.

Divisional forest officer (DFO) Lalit Kumar Verma said, "The area which we have chosen is ravine and completely barren. The aim is to plant native species like peepal, banyan, sheesham and other such trees. We also carry out soil and moisture conservation project in the area to improve ground water level."

According to the forest department, the work on this project is expected to start in a month. "We have got the green signal from the UP culture department and the work will start as soon as we get the requisite funds," Verma added.

Under the project, there is a plan to treat a nullah passing through the forest area, and for this purpose a check dam will be constructed. A walking plaza and track will also be laid in the reserve forest area.

In another similar project, the forest department has come up with an upgradation plan of Hathi ghat, near the Agra Fort. The department had already done a plantation drive and now plans to develop it as a leisure park.

"We have sought assistance of the Agra Development Authority to provide us a fund for this purpose. We plan to construct a similar walking track facility here, besides making available basic amenities, he added.
