Answer : The magnetic moment is, 5.916 BM

Solution :

The metal is, Mn

The electronic configuration of Mn is, 1s^22s^22p^63s^23p^64s^23d^5

The oxidation state of Mn is,

Let the oxidation state of Mn be 'x'

x+6(0)=+2\\\\x=+2

So, the oxidation state of Mn is (+2)

As we know that the water is a weak field ligand. So, the electrons will be singly occupied.

The number of unpaired electrons in Mn = 5

Formula used for magnetic moment :

\mu=\sqrt{n(n+2)}

where,

\mu = magnetic moment

n = number of unpaired electrons

Now put all the given values in the above formula, we get the magnetic moment.

\mu=\sqrt{5(5+2)}=5.916BM

Therefore, the magnetic moment is, 5.916 BM
