Here, consider the formula that for a square;

Perimeter=4a


where a is the measurement of the side of the square.

So, for the square having side of x units;

Perimeter=4x

  ... (1)

Similarly, for the square having side of y units;

Perimeter=4y

  ... (2)

Thus, using equation (1) and (2);

Mean=

4x+4y

2

Mean=

2(2x+2y)

2

Mean=2x+2y



Therefore, the  mean of the perimeters of the square having sides of x and y units is 2x+2y
