(x + y) = 3

(x - y) = 1

Step-by-step explanation:

Given that,

27x + 31y = 85  &

31x + 27y =  89

To find,

(x + y) = ?

(x - y) = ?

Procedure:

To find (x + y) & (x - y), we will find the value of x and y first.

27x + 31y = 85   ...(i)

31x + 27y = 89    ...(ii)

by adding equations (i) & (ii), we get

58x + 58y = 174

by dividing both the sides by 58, we get

⇒ 58( x + y) = 174

⇒ (x + y) = 174/58

∵ (x + y) = 3

by subtracting equation (ii) - (i), we get

⇒ 31x - 27x + 27y - 31y = 89 - 85

⇒ 4x - 4y = 4

⇒ 4 (x - y) = 4

⇒ (x - y) = 4/1

∵ (x - y) = 1
