In my attempt to respond, although I am not an expert but I would say that land is important to man for the following reasons:

Land is necessary for existence. We certainly need to have a place to literally exist and land provides this basic need.

Humans thrive on quests for power and you will certainly be in possession of power when you command the use of a critical factor of existence - land.
