Both rockets and jet planes need thrust to move forward which is provided by the fast moving blast of hot air exiting out of the nozzle/exhaust. This air is hot and fast because of combustion of fuel in this air. Jet planes use the air in the atmosphere, which contains oxygen tocause the combustion.
