The reason is simple.
Copper or Aluminium both are the second and third metals having the least resistivity, thereby allowing more current to pass through them.
The first highest metal having the least resistivity is Silver. But since the commercial value of Silver is high, we use Copper and Aluminium for producing wires as the production of Copper and Aluminium is more efficient and cheap.
