FOR ME, THE MOST UNFORGETTABLE EVENT OF THE INDIAN FREEDOM MOVEMENT IS DANDI MARCH, BECAUSE….
Dandi march or the Salt Protest is the most unforgettable event of the Indian freedom movement for me because it was not just for the freedom from the foreign rule. The essence of this march lie in the recognition of the right to live with dignity by the human beings with free access to the very source of life such as salt.
It was the year 1930 and the freedom movement in India was at its peak. Mahatma Gandhi preferred to express protest in unique non violent methods. Salt is essential for the human life. This commodity was taxed by the government heavily. Not only that, there were strict laws in the country prohibiting the extraction of salt from the sea. The natural resource of salt was available in plenty as India has very long coast line. Anyone trying to extract salt from the seawater used to be arrested and fined. The poor people of India could not afford buying salt which was imported by the government.
On 12th March 1930 Mahatma Gandhi along with Sarojini Naidu and other followers set out on foot from his Sabarmati river hermitage in Ahmedabad with the intention to reach the sea shore near Surat and extract salt from the sea water. He appealed to people to follow him to that place. He advised people all over the country to form groups and march to the nearest sea shores to extract salt and break the infamous law.
Mahatma Gandhi reached Surat coast line on 6th April 1930 and broke the law by extracting salt from the sea water. The entire nation was electrified with this novel idea. People in large numbers and in groups travelled by foot to the sea shores to break the salt law. The world had never seen such unique event till then.
