Answer:

So in the Lewis structure for PF6 its okay that we have 12 valence electrons around the Phosphorous atom. Also note that you should put the PF6 Lewis structure in brackets with as 1- on the outside to show that it is an ion with a negative one charge.

The formal charge of PF₆ is -1

  • PF₆ has lewis structure.Phosphorous have 5 valence electrons and flourine has 7 valence electrons
  • Phosphorous will be at the center if the structure and the 6 flourine atoms will surround the phosporous atom
  • Phosphorous is in the below period 2 in the periodic table and it can have an expanded octet
  • It can hold more than 8 electrons in its valence shell
  • Due  to this expanded octet the phosphorous atom has a formal charge of -1
  • The compound is represented as PF₆⁻
