Answer:

Explanation:

The political entity of India is only 68 years old, then what kept this nation together? No matter how many kingdoms were there, empires came and went, conquerors came and went.

We are not united by the polity. Neither by language, nor by ethnicity.

But yet we were united and different from China and Persia, the 2 other civilizations in the vicinity. That is only by the faith, the emotion we and our ancestors have vested in "Dharma".

By Dharma - I mean the religion, the values, the traditions and the culture. It is a forest of interconnected trees, spread all over the subcontinent. And the first introduction to majority of us, from the time we are children, are the stories of these 2 - Rama and Krishna.

We grow and build our worldview from these and hence they are critical to our identity. And this identity we share with millions across the country.

Now that I and you have this shared identity, does it not unite us?

Caveat: I do not mean that Ramayana and Mahabharatha are the only such shared identities. Neither are all shared identities from the Dharma legends. I could share an identity as a fan of Kamal Haasan or Aamir Khan, as an user of Android and so on.

But Ramayana and Mahabharatha, I would speculate is the identity of majority of Indians, even in the contemporary times. I hope they remain so, even when we obtain other  unifying identities.
