Gandhi once had a very costly fountain pen. This favourite pen of his was stolen by
someone. Deeply pained by the incident, Gandhi never used anything costly or attractive
after that. He did this to make sure that he didn't tempt anyone to steal again. He began
using a nib and a wooden pen-holder.
Once, the nib he was writing with bent, and he had to send his niece, Madubehn, to get a
new one. When Madubehn returned with the new nib, she found Gandhi sharpening the
other end of the wooden pen-holder. Madubehn was surprised to see this.
"Why couldn't you have waited a few more minutes?" she asked her uncle.
To this Gandhi replied with a smile, "The point of my nib will never bend now. Every minute
is precious to me. Even a few minutes' delay could upset my whole day's plan."
Gandhi now had a pen that could never be stolen or broken.
No wonder, then, that he became such a great humanitarian and an inspirational figure for
so many people!
