The General Service Enlistment Act was passed on 1856

  • The British passed an Act in 1856 called the General Service Enlistment Act.
  • According to this Act Indian soldiers could be sent overseas for duties.
  • But it was a taboo for Brahmins to cross the sea
  • This act did not take into consideration the sentiment of Indians
  • The Brahmin's soldiers saw in it the danger of losing their caste
