- The British passed an Act in 1856 called the General Service Enlistment Act.
- According to this Act Indian soldiers could be sent overseas for duties.
- But it was a taboo for Brahmins to cross the sea
- This act did not take into consideration the sentiment of Indians
- The Brahmin's soldiers saw in it the danger of losing their caste
