A genetic code is a triplet code. It is because singlet and doublet codes codons cannot form 20 combinations.

20 combination, however, is the minimum requirement for the same. And that is the reason why, a triplet codon is necessary. It helps all the amino acids to be coded. Genetic code is non-overlapping. One base of a codon is not used by the other codons.
