ALGAE is an informal term for a large, diverse group of photosynthetic eukaryotic organisms that are not necessarily closely related, and is thus polyphyletic. Including organisms ranging from unicellular microalgae genera, such as Chlorella and the diatoms, to multicellular forms, such as the giant kelp, a large brown alga which may grow up to 50 m in length.

Algae are aquatic green plants found in puddles, streams, ponds and oceans as bright green layer on the surface. Algae may be single celled multi-celled or colonial. These are plant like organisms containing chlorophyll. On the basis of pigments they are classified into the following three types:
★GREEN ALGAE contain only chlorophyll.
★BROWN ALGAE contain brown pigment along with chlorophyll.
★RED ALGAE contains red and blue pigments along with chlorophyll.
