A look of the layers from a distance gives one a cross - section view of the ground (beneath the surface ) and the kind of the soils and rocks it is made up of. This cross - section view is called a soil profile. The soil is made up of layers , running parallel to the surface , called soil horizons .
There are 3 main horizons ( called A,B and C) which are present in all soils.
1) Organic : The organic layer (also called the humus layer) is a thick layer of plant remains such as leaves and twigs.
2) Topsoil : Topsoil is considered the 'A' horizon.
3) Subsoil : Subsoil is considered the 'B' horizon.
