The kings who ruled these Janapadas become very powerful and kept regular armies. They extended their territories from the the Indus region—the original settlements of Indo-Aryans to the gangaYamuna doab. The kings of this Janapadas used to get voluntary gifts from their subjects.

Some of this Janapadas came to be known by the name of the dominant tribe which ruled them. Many powerful Janapadas, like Kuru, Panchala, Kosala and Videha are mentioned in our epics like the Mahabharata and the Puranas.

The people of this Janapadas made pottery of grey and red colour. Some of them had geometric designs and simple lines painted on them with black and white colour. These potteries were named as painted grayware and redware pottery.
