Blood tissue is made up of red and white blood cells, platelets and plasma. The red blood cells carry oxygen, the white blood cells form part of the immune system, the platelets are used in wound healing and the plasma is a liquid medium in which the cells and platelets are carried.
Plasma consists of water, clotting factors (such as fibrinogen), electrolytes, nutrients and non-coagulating proteins (e.g. antibodies).
Serum is plasma without clotting factors.
