Queen Elizabeth I issued a Royal Charter on 31 December 1600, for establishing the English East India Company.

The East India Company was set up for trade relationship with India - which was rich in spices, indigo, cotton, salt etc. Wealthy merchants and nobility owned shares in the East India Company. It also had a private army.

The company established cordial relations with the rulers and wealthy merchants of India.

In 1874, with growing presence, the British government dissolved and absorbed the East India Company.
