The French East India Company took roots in India, in the second half of the seventeenth century.
The French set up their first factory in Surat, in the year 1668. The next year another factory was started in Masulipatnam. They gradually set up their establishments in Pondichery, Karikal, Yanaon, Mahe and Chandranagore.
During the administration of the Governor Joseph François Dupleix, the French had control over areas stretching from Hyderabad to the southernmost tip of India. But by the early 1800s', the French had lost control over their conquests in India and the British had taken over.
