The East India Company was acquired by the British from the Portuguese. When the marriage treaty of Charles II of England and Catherine of Braganza who was the daughter of King John IV of Portugal was finalized in May 1662, it entailed the handover of Bombay to the British as a dowry given to Charles II. The acquisition was finally made by the British in 1668.

Although the dowry resulted in Bombay coming under British control, some villages here were still under the Portuguese control. However, these  villages were also acquired by the British in later years.
