Hey there!

It is a silicon or germanium crystal that forms a tetrahedral structure similar to that of carbon by covalent bonds between its atoms, in the figure represented in the plane by simplicity. When the crystal is at room temperature some electrons can absorb the energy needed to jump to the conduction band leaving the corresponding gap in the valence band (1). The required energies, at room temperature, are 1.12 eV and 0.67 eV for silicon and germanium respectively..
