Early trade activities, industrial revolution:

The industrial revolution started in Europe around the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The traders and merchants needed to set up their factories and for this they needed workers. But, the majority of people during this period were living in villages and were related to agricultural activities. The traders first went to these villages to meet up their factories and made the poor agricultural labourers work for them instead.

To set up the factories they took the open fields which were used by small peasants to grow hay, berries, vegetables, etc but now they had no place to go and this resulted in them working for these merchants. But, later when the first machine of spinning mills appeared in England large scale production of cotton was started.

Cotton was brought from India and other colonies and the process of spinning and finally making clothes was done in large factories of England. Now the factories shifted to the towns of London, Manchester, Liverpool, etc. And, this led to the large scale migration of workers from rural England this also created the problem of urban slums in London.

Some of the questions from this chapter could be:

  1. During the early phase of the industrial revolution why were, laborers considered more important than machines by industrialists?
  2. Why were the wages of the workers increased nominally in the early nineteenth century?
  3. Why did slums come up in London during the early nineteenth century?
