Answer:

(a) In both cases, the gas evolved is H2. When calcium reacts with water the heat evolved is not sufficient for hydrogen to catch fire. On the other hard, potassium reacts with water violently and lot of heat is evolved which is sufficient for hydrogen to catch fire.

Answer:

Hydrogen gas does not support combustion.

Therefore, it does not catch fire.

Explanation:

Metals react with water to form metal hydroxides and hydrogen gas.

When Calcium metal is dropped in water, it reacts with water to form Calcium Hydroxide and hydrogen gas.

The equation is given as follows:

Ca + 2H₂O -----------> Ca(OH)₂ + H₂

Hydrogen gas does not support combustion.

Therefore, it does not catch fire.
