The troposphere is the lowest layer of Earth's atmosphere, and is also where nearly all weather conditions take place. It contains 75% of the atmosphere's mass and 99% of the total mass of water vapour and aerosols.

Troposphere. Known as the lower atmosphere almost all weather occurs in this region. The troposphere begins at the Earth's surface and extends from 4 to 12 miles (6 to 20 km) high. The height of the troposphere varies from the equator to the poles.

Temperatures decrease with altitude in the troposphere at a rate of about 6.5 degrees Celsius (11.7 degrees Fahrenheit) per kilometer, depending on the weather. This occurs as a result of decreasing air pressure with altitude. As pressure decreases, air expands, and it cools as it does so.
