Give reasons for the following.
(a) Uranus is observed to have a 'blue-green' colour.
(b) Venus is the hottest planet even though Mercury is closest to the sun.
(c) The shape and size of bright side of moon appears to change (gradually)
everyday.
(d) A star appears to rise four minutes earlier in the sky everyday than the
previous day.
(e) Comets become visible only when they are near the sun.

Answer

a) Because of this, its poles are sometimes pointed almost directly at the Sun. Uranus' atmosphere is made up of hydrogen, helium, and methane. The temperature in the upper atmosphere is very cold. The cold methane gas is what gives Uranus its blue-green color.

b) The degree of hotness of a planet does not depend on as much on closeness to the Sun as on its atmosphere. Carbon dioxide has the tendency to absorb heat which in turn increases the temperature

c) The moon is totally opaque and it does not have any light of its own. It reflects the sunlight that falls on it, and therefore, the shape and size of the bright side of the moon starts changing everyday gradually. The intensity of the sunlight that falls on the moon makes the phase of the moon change everyday.

d) it should be noted that along with rotating on its axis in 24 hours the Earth also revolves around the sun. This 1 degree shift in the Earth's position due its motion in an orbit around the sun causes the sky to shift.

e) Since comet tails are shaped by sunlight and the solar wind, they always point away from the sun. ... We can see a number of comets with the naked eye when they pass close to the sun because their comas and tails reflect sunlight or even glow because of energy they absorb from the sun.

thanks

Answer:

(a) Uranus' atmosphere is made up of hydrogen, helium, and methane. The temperature in the upper atmosphere is very cold. The cold methane gas is what gives Uranus its blue-green color.

(b) The thick atmosphere of Venus makes its surface hotter as the heat doesn't escape back into space. VENUS IS EVEN HOTTER THAN MERCURY THOUGH IT IS RELATIVELY FARTHER AWAY FROM THE SUN. THIS IS BECAUSE OF THE HIGH PERCENTAGE OF CARBON DIOXIDE IN IT'S ATMOSPHERE. THIS GAS TRAPS MOST OF THE SUN'S HEAT FALLING ON IT.

(c) The moon is totally opaque and it does not have any light of its own. It reflects the sunlight that falls on it, and therefore, the shape and size of the bright side of the moon starts changing everyday gradually. The intensity of the sunlight that falls on the moon makes the phase of the moon change everyday.

(d) It should be noted that along with rotating on its axis in 24 hours the Earth also revolves around the sun.The stars rise 4 minutes earlier each day because the earth has also moved through its orbit as it has rotated around from night to day to night.

(e)Since comet tails are shaped by sunlight and the solar wind, they always point away from the sun. ... We can see a number of comets with the naked eye when they pass close to the sun because their comas and tails reflect sunlight or even glow because of energy they absorb from the sun.
