Force causes change in velocity.

Newtons second law: 
F = ma
a = F/m
Velocity as function of initial velocity [v0], acceleration[a] and time[t]: 
v = v0 + at

Velocity, as a function of force[F]: 
v(F) = v0 + Ft/m

As we can see, velocity is directly proportional to the applied force and duration of that force.
