DECLINE OF THE MAURYAS. The decline of the Maurya Dynasty was rather rapid after the death of Ashoka/Asoka. One obvious reasonfor it was the succession of weak kings. Another immediate cause was the partition of the Empire into two.

After Ashoka the great, the successive rulers didn't have the capacity to rule such a large empire and it began to weaken and eventually ended.

All great empires decline after one of the strongest leaders or ruler in feudal rule. It happened with the Roman empires after the Ceasers. Because great leaders because of their force of personality, vision and strength overcome many of their neighbors, enemies and enlarge their kingdom/ empire. Afterwards, it becomes quite a challenge to the successive rulers to scale up and rule the larger landmass and people. The same happened to the Capet dynasty in France after Louis XIV, to the Mughals after Aurangazeb. The successive rulers are also not that much capable to handle external aggression, as it happened in the Mauryan empire, when the Greco-Bactrian rulers attacked it. When the Mauryan emperor Brihadata wasn't capable enough, his army general Pushyamitra Sunga assassinated him. Some history analysts say that the Mauryan emperor was a Budhist and the general Sunga was a Hindu Brahmin and the assassination was due to clash between Buddhism and Hinduism or more specifically Brahmins. There are others who don't subscribe to that view. If the Buddhist emperor had nominated a Hindu Brahmin as an army general, may be there wasn't a persecution or domination of Buddhists over Hindu Brahmins. The emperor hadn't effectively fought against the Greco-Bactrian invader Demetrius. Demetrius occupied even Pataliputra and had to leave to fight some other battle in Bactria. So, perhaps when the Army general found the emperor to be too weak and not being capable to defend his country, the general decided to kill the emperor. As you know such things happened often, then.

Reasons for the end of the Mauryan empire
Division of the empire into Western and Eastern part. Division leads to weakness. The subsequent Emperors/ Kings were weak and not effective.Conflict between Buddhists and Hindus (perhaps it happened then). The empire became too difficult to sustain and the rulers couldn't manage it well.Such things happened to many empires afterwardsOne exception was the British monarchy. It has sustained because the King's political decision making power (most importantly power to wage war) gradually reduced and was taken over by the British parliament. And the parliament being the people's representation was able to take decisions after internal deliberations and could survive till today.
